In 1910, French-Canadian priest Father Josaphat Jean travelled to Ukraine to educate himself on Eastern rites as well as Ukrainian language and culture. Aside from learning the country’s language, he also collected an array of religious artifacts. The communist regime in Ukraine in 1940 led to the creation of the the Mundare Museum, which houses Father Jean’s collections, in order to preserve the rich cultural and religious heritage of Ukraine in Canada.

And in 1991, a new museum was built and named the Basilian Fathers Museum where the collections are now permanently kept. Currently, the museum features two types of collections, the Religious and the Folk collections. The religious collections are basically religious artifacts which include old liturgical books, crucifixes, church furnishings, chalices, and many more. The folk collection includes Ukrainian artifacts such as embroidery, hand-woven clothing, Ukrainian Easter eggs and many more.

Aside from the artifacts and collections, the Basilian Fathers Museum is also home to several exhibits including the The New Home in the West, the Service in the Vineyard of the Lord, and the Basilian Fathers and their People. The first exhibit displays the change of dwellings of early Ukranian settlers while the second provides tourists an overview of the Basilian Order’s history and its development.

Meanwhile, The Basilian Fathers and their People offers a glimpse of the Basilian Fathers’ missions in Alberta, Canada. In addition to these exhibits, several other temporary exhibits and displays are available all over the museum. A different experience awaits as you tour this site for it allows the visitors to experience the life and work inside a coal mine. You get to have a fascinating look at the surrounding landscapes of the Atlas Coal Mine and ride coal trucks and railroad cars as you explore the 210 feet underground tunnel and pass through the mine terrace and mine entry. You will also have the opportunity to meet real people who have been into coal mining and be inspired as you listen to their stories.

Also, you get to enjoy watching the documentary Thunder in the Valley and visit other parts of the museum like the newly restored mine office, battery shack and the miner’s shack all made from straw, mud and manure.
