The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco is composed of two divisions; the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park and the De Young Museum in the Golden Gate Park. These two are considered as the largest public institutions of arts that can be found in the city. They are also among the largest art museums that are based in the United States.
The De Young Museum is the oldest museum in San Francisco. The collections that can be found in this establishment consist of American paintings, decorative arts and crafts, as well as arts from Oceania, Africa, and the Americas. They also have western and non-western textiles. For many years, it was called as the City’s Museum. It was able to gain recognition for the many educational arts programs which it offers to both adults and children.
On the other hand, the Legion of Honor has been built in order to give tribute to the Californian soldiers who died during World War I. Since it overlooks the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the rest of San Francisco, the Legion has been famous for its breathtaking scenery. The collections that can be found inside this museum include European decorative arts, paintings, and ancient art. Aside from this, the Legion also holds one of the country’s finest and largest collections of works done on paper such as books, photographs, drawings, and prints.
