Fort McCoy is an active military installation and a good place to spend some leisure and recreation. In the past, the Fort served as a maneuver point and strategic position in 1909. It was previously made up of two camps; Camp Emory Upton and Camp Robinson. And then in 1926, a retired Major General by the name of Robert Bruce McCoy proposed the area as a training ground and bought most of the properties on which the fort stands. It was then named Camp McCoy. Then during World War 2, the camp was used as a training facility for units across America and at one time also served as a POW camp. Now Fort McCoy also is a venue for recreational activities whether it is camping or hunting. The fort still is a commemorative area where there are World War 2 buildings and facilities that depict the life of a soldier during the war. There’s also the history center building in the Fort McCoy’s Commemorative Area and the History Center & Equipment Park that features displays of memorabilia throughout the past wars.
