Centre Georges Pompidou, or Pompidou Centre in English, offers locals and tourists and locals a unique spectacle designed to illicit awe and admiration. Located in the Beaubourg Paris, this unique and highly sophisticated architecture was designed by architects and structural engineers Renzo Piano, Richard and Su Rogers, GianFranco Franchini, Peter Rice and Edmund Happold for France’s President Georges Pompidou (1969-1974).

Locally known simply as Beaubourg, it was opened to the public by French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing in January 1977. Centre Georges Pompidue features an innovative “inside out” architectural design with its escalators, elevators and air-conditioning all on the outside. This unique design elicited mixed reactions from different spectators- both negative and positive. However, despite its eccentric design, it has garnered more than 150 million visitors since it became open to the public.

Pompidou Centre is home to the largest public library, Bibliotheque publique d’information, Europe’s largest modern art museum, Musee National d’Art Moderne, the center of music and acoustic research IRCAM. It has also been used for temporary exhibitions and has also been used in several films including a James Bond film entitled Moonraker. Aside from its unique structure and wonderful exhibitions, this unique architecture also boasts of other amenities including restaurants and internet cafes.

In addition, locals and tourists can delight themselves with the Stravinsky Fountain located nearby. It boasts of 16 water-spraying sculptures designed by Niki de Saint-Phalle and Jean Tinguely that represents Igor Stravinsky’s works. Furthermore, in front of the museum stands the Place Georges Pompidou, which is home to street performers, carnivals and other attractions.

It is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 am- 10:00 pm and on Saturday and Sunday of the same time. To get here, you can simply take the Metro stations (Rambuteau and Les Halles) or the RER (Chatelet- Les Halles).
